The Paintings of Vincent van Gogh: Holland, Paris, Arles and Auvers Details

Van Gogh loved art from an early age. He began to draw as a child, and he continued making drawings throughout the years leading to his decision to become an artist. He did not begin painting until his late twenties, completing many of his best-known works during his last two years. He died at the age of 37. In just over a decade, van Gogh produced more than 2,100 artworks, consisting of 860 oil paintings and more than 1.300 watercolours, drawings, sketches and prints. Vincent van Gogh lived 120 years ago, and yet his artwork is still altering the way we view beauty, persona, individuality, and style in art. His many paintings and drawings have been copied by thousands but duplicated by none. What people today consider the archetypical artistic persona is largely the result of his influence. This book contains 500 paintings on 230 color plates, many of which are in private collections and not easily accessible. The book includes a detailed biography and a eulogy by contemporary artists: Emile Barnard and Paul Gauguin.

Reviews

I bought this book because I wanted to see color versions of all of Van Gogh's paintings during his last years. However this book was a disappointment. First of all the cover image of the famous painting Starry Night is cropped- i.e. it is not even the entire painting. Also the color is off; I have seen this painting and it does not look like the image on the cover nor the image inside the book. The images seemed to be taken from the Web and then pasted, not done by professional photo digitalizers. Also most of the text is taken from Wikipedia and is very redundant in several places. There are also misspellings on almost every page. This book was printed in Thailand which perhaps has different copyright laws than the U.S. and on the copyright page of this book there is an indication that the publishers are being sued. The paper this book is printed on seems very cheap, not even glossy stock and the images are flat and unalive-looking.Do not waste your money on this shoddy book.
